Today's Feature Friday goes to WigOutGraphics who have recently moved to Sacramento, CA .... awesome artist, and PBR and PIN-UPS GALORE!!!!!!What More do ya need???
Tell us, Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Wendy Giminski. My business name is Wig Out Graphics. I've been doing illustration, painting, drawing, mixed media, and graphic design for over 25 years. I've held all kinds of regular jobs too. Right now I'm on unemployment from regular work, so I'm trying to get more painting and illustration customers, (plus another dishwashing gig! )
Why do you do what you do?
Because doing Art, and working Service Industry or production are all i know!
Tell us a little about your background?
Born with a bad attitude! haha! BFA from Syracuse eons ago. I've been a screen printer, a hand staker, ( factory line work wise guys!….), production painter, studio assistant for 4 people in glass and 2 in ceramics, a dishwasher, waitress, a graphic designer and illustrator for companies other than my own, an art director, a sales clerk, an assistant manager of a book store and an art supply store, mat cutter, sales clerk, and a Mom! guess that's it…..oh yeah, i actually got an Individual Artist's Grant from the state of Georgia in 1992/93.
Who are you most inspired by?
Boris Artzybasheff, Basil Wolverton, Danzig Baldaev, Mad Magazine, Big Daddy Ed Roth, Don Ed Hardy, Ray Haryhausen, Arthur Rackham, Walt Kelly, Betrix Potter, Georgia O'Keefe, R. Crumb, Spain Rodriguez, Robert Williams, Dali, Bosch, Richard Feynman, Carl Sagan, Hunter S. Thomson, John Waters, Robert Anton WIlson,….. the list is huge
What work do you most enjoying doing?
Any kind of Art Work! Painting and mixed media painted sculpture are my favorites to do. For regular jobs it's small service industry/retail cuz I love to meet people and hear their stories. Favorite thing about any otherjobs?-Cashing my pay check- and then GTFO. I do not like corporate ANYthing.
What themes do you pursue?
Mostly humorous ones-some sillier or sicker than others. Shape, space, color, form, composition, and getting a message or joke across are what I strive for most. On the serious side, I've also done a lot of natural science illustration and drawing.
Describe a real-life situation that inspired you?
wow- too many to go into! Right now I'm working on a series called "What SHE said!" which is a bunch of paintings illustrating crazy humorous things my Mom with Alzheimer's has said to me over the past 3 years.
Hearing other's stories and having conversations are what inspire me the most. (also why i love Happy Hour!). I've met so many interesting, intelligent people just by working in small retail and restaurant establishments. Some folks i met as co-workers or customers 20 years ago turned into life long friends.
What song/songs/music genres inspire you?
Depends on my mood- punk, hardcore, metal, chicago blues, old school country, rockabilly, psychobilly, Bill Hicks, Buddy Guy, Jr. Wells, Hubert Sumlin, Roomful of Blues, Richard Cheese, Goggol Bordello, Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, BOA, ACDC, Aerosmith, Motorhead, Descendants, Offspring, NOFX, George Jones, Johnny Paycheck, Merle, Ween, Supersuckers, its all over the place…..
What do you dislike about your work?
Aside from never thinking its "good enough", I hate having to store it all, or having it come back to me mildewed or destroyed by people I've given it to.
What do you like about your work?
Finishing a whole series of things, seeing them all together, and thinking Damn! THOSE were a pain in the ass to do, but YEEHAW- i'm done!
Name something you love, and why.
Hanging out with friends for Happy Hour! It's a family tradition. (think Hank Jr. or really, more like Hank 3 here) being outside when the weather is nice, the beach!
What is your dream project?
To be commissioned to do a whole series of paintings or illustrations for publication in some national magazine for exposure and more work. Also to do a series of original painted and mixed media work that i can complete at home and someone else installs somewhere that leads to other similar jobs.
Favorite or most inspirational place?
the BEACH! ANYwhere- North Atlantic to South Pacific- my favorites being Kauai, anywhere on Cape Cod, Tybee Island GA, and Ft. Meyers Beach FL so far.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
That i TOOK? haha! I don't know. Here's some of the worst I've gotten tho-I asked an Art Prof once, just WHO did anyone have to know to "make it" in the art world? and he said, "oh honey! ….it's not who you KNOW its who you BLOW!" (yuk) Alternately it's something my Marine Corps DI Dad used to yell at us when we were kids- "Do it well or not at All!" which usually made me think…. well why bother! HE's not gonna be happy with it! screw this. think I'll go smoke a cigarette behind the barn…
Professionally, what’s your goal?
Selling enough of my work to live on and be able to work full time on commissions and crazy stuff without having to go back to corporate sheyt, or dishwashing full time. To get another Grant would be awesome too. you know…the regular stuff ALL artists or musicians want!
